From his youth, Brahms was fascinated and inspired by Hungarin gypsy music. In 1848, hundreds of Hngarians, many of them gypsy musicians, filled the streets of his native Hamburg as refugees from the Hungarian revolution. They play Hungarian popular music, freely stylized in thier own manner. Most gypsy bands consisted of one or two violins, double bass, and the Hungarian cimbalom. Occasionally, a clarinet or other wind instrument would enhance the colorful sound.
