Description:
Milhaud arrived in Rio de Janeiro in February of 1917 during the Carnival festivities. For six weeks, the general public celebrated with dancing, singing and dressing in fantastic costumes. During his stay, he traveled throughout much of the country with Paul Claudel, who was serving as the French Minister to Brazil. Milhaud took the opportunity to study the folk music of Brazil while absorbing the colorful Brazilian culture, especially the native rhythms and dances.
